Significant Accomplishments
1988-2002

1988

  • Needs Assessment of 43 cancer centers and 112 patient educators conducted by National Cancer Institute (NCI) Office of Cancer Communications (OCC) Patient Education Branch (PEB) to collect data regarding a patient education network

1989

  • Two planning meetings hosted by NCI OCC PEB to discuss goals and activities of a network
  • Cancer Patient Education Network (CPEN) established by NCI OCC PEB

1990

  • 1st Annual CPEN Meeting, held at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, becomes a centerpiece of network activities and state-of-the-art educational programs

1991

  • 2nd Annual CPEN Meeting held at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Rochester, MN

1992

  • 3rd Annual CPEN Meeting held at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chapel Hill, NC

1993

  • Guidelines for Establishing Comprehensive Cancer Patient Education Services developed by CPEN task force
  • 4th Annual CPEN Meeting held at Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center/University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA

1994

  • 5th Annual CPEN Meeting held at University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Pittsburgh, PA

1995

  • 6th Annual CPEN Meeting held at National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD

1996

  • 7th Annual CPEN Meeting held at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY
  • CPEN task force develops By-Laws to govern Network; membership adopts By-Laws

1997

  • First Steering Committee elected with Kathy Conrad as Chair
  • 8th Annual CPEN Meeting held at Karmanos Cancer Center, Detroit, MI

1998

  • Under direction of NCI OCC PEB, CPEN launches electronic listserv
  • 9th Annual CPEN Meeting held at James Cancer Center, Columbus, OH
  • Research Committee established

1999

  • All-CPEN Conference Calls initiated for CPEN members to update Network on NCI activities and selected topics
  • CPEN/NCI Leadership Exchange Program established, in which a CPEN member is selected to spend a week at NCI learning about national-priority cancer education issues
  • CPEN Awards Program developed to recognize Outstanding Leadership in Cancer Patient Education, programs, and materials
  • Learning Resource Center Committee completes survey of Learning Centers at NCI-designated Cancer Centers and publishes findings on the CPEN Web site
  • New Member Orientation Committee established
  • Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) Committee established
  • 10th Annual CPEN Meeting held at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL

2000

  • Steering Committee (SC) Retreat held at M. D. Anderson hosted by chair Louise Villejo
  • CPEN Web site (http://cpen.nci.nih.gov) is launched
  • Staff Development Committee established, with survey results published on the CPEN Web site
  • Reorganization of NCI Cancer Communications takes place, with Patient Education Branch now reporting to new Office of Education and Special Initiatives (OESI)
  • CAM Committee partners with national group to hold national CAM conference.
  • 11th Annual CPEN Meeting held at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

2001

  • CAM Committee provides testimony before White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine regarding recommendations for patient education
  • Research Committee publishes journal article in August 2001 issue of Oncology Nursing Forum
  • CPEN Strategic Plan 2000-2002 is completed
  • NCI OESI and CPEN work to establish new goals and strategies for working relationship
  • Steering Committee/NCI OESI Retreat held at NCI
  • 12th Annual CPEN Meeting scheduled to be held at Huntsman Cancer Center, Salt Lake City, UT, cancelled due to events of 9/11
  • Journal Club initiates meetings via telephone

2002

  • SC Retreat hosted by Chair Lydia Cheney at University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • NCI OESI PEB recruits new Chief, Lenora Johnson, MPH, CHES
  • CAM and Research Committees initiate a multi-institution patient education research project
  • SC completes revision of CPEN Strategic Plan 2002-2005
  • 13th CPEN Annual Conference held at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
